Account Executive Interview Question

How do you qualify an opportunity? Walk me through the framework you use.

What the interviewer is probing, how to structure your answer, and a spoken example you can adapt.

Quick answer

Use a framework consistently rather than perfectly. MEDDPICC covers metrics, economic buyer, decision criteria, decision process, paper process, identified pain, champion, and competition. Qualification is not a checklist you fill in after the fact; it is a set of gaps you actively work. If you cannot name the economic buyer and the paper process by the second meeting, you have an interest, not an opportunity.

Why interviewers ask this

Every AE says they use MEDDIC. The interviewer is checking whether it is a real operating habit or a word you learned in onboarding. They want to hear which letters you are usually weakest on, how you close those gaps, and what you do when a deal fails qualification. Naming the paper process and decision criteria specifically is a strong signal, because those are the letters most reps skip and the ones that slip deals at quarter end.

How to structure your answer

  • Name the framework you actually use and stay consistent with it.
  • Explain how you turn missing letters into next steps, not notes.
  • Call out the two letters most reps get wrong and why.
  • Say what triggers you to disqualify and push a deal out.

Example answer

Spoken example, first person

I run MEDDPICC, and the important part for me is that it is a gap list, not a form. After every call I look at the record and ask which letters I could not defend to my manager. If I cannot state the metric in their language, that is my next question. If I have not seen the paper process, I ask the champion who signs and whether security review is involved, because at enterprise level that is usually six weeks I have not budgeted for. The two I see reps fudge are the economic buyer and decision criteria. People write down a name they have never spoken to and call it the economic buyer, and they write down our own feature list as the criteria, which is just wishful thinking. I also disqualify out loud. Last year I pushed a deal out of the quarter because there was no funded budget line, and I told my manager it was a next-year deal in week three rather than letting it sit in commit. It closed the following quarter, and my forecast stayed clean.
