Tech Mahindra Interview Questions

Tech Mahindra hires freshers through campus and off-campus drives into engineering, network and business process roles, and laterals across telecom, cloud and enterprise accounts, screening with aptitude, writing and interviews.

Candidates commonly report that Tech Mahindra's process is conventional in shape but broader in destination than its peers. The same fresher drive can lead to a software engineering seat, a network or telecom operations role, or a business process services position, and the track you are mapped to shapes both the interview and the shift pattern you will work. Screening typically starts with an online paper covering quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability and a technical section, followed by an essay or written English task. Group discussions are still reported in a fair number of campus drives, which is now uncommon among the large services firms. Technical and HR interviews usually follow, often on the same day. Laterals apply through portals, referrals and consultants, skip aptitude, and face a technical screen plus a managerial round, with joining set against the notice period. The frequent stumble is a candidate preparing purely for software questions and landing in a telecom or network panel.

The interview process, round by round

  1. Online aptitude and technical assessment Online, proctored, typically 60 to 90 minutes

Sectional in most reported experiences: quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability and a technical multiple choice section drawing on C, data structures, DBMS, operating systems and networking. Candidates commonly report separate sectional timers and sectional cut-offs, and report the technical section reaching into networking more often than at comparable firms, reflecting the company's telecom heritage.

  2. Essay or written English test Online, typically 15 to 30 minutes

A short written task on a general topic, scored on grammar, structure, coherence and word count rather than the position you take. Copy paste is usually disabled and spellcheck is normally unavailable. Candidates commonly report this as a real filter, particularly for roles with client-facing or voice components, where written and spoken English is weighted heavily throughout the process.

  3. Group discussion In person or video, typically 15 to 20 minutes in groups

Reported mainly in campus drives and for business process roles rather than in every off-campus cycle. Topics are usually general and current: remote work versus office, social media and privacy, artificial intelligence and jobs, or whether examinations measure ability. Assessors commonly report looking for whether you enter the discussion early, stay on point, let others speak and can summarise, rather than for who talks loudest.

  4. Technical interview Video call or in person, typically 20 to 45 minutes

Software panels work through your final year project, language fundamentals, OOP, DBMS with live SQL and a data structure question or two. Network and telecom panels ask a different paper: OSI layers, TCP and UDP, IP addressing and subnetting, routing basics, DNS and DHCP, and how you would isolate a connectivity fault. Laterals report a focused screen on the exact stack or platform being staffed.

  5. HR interview Video call or in person, typically 10 to 25 minutes

Fit, flexibility and documentation. Expect relocation across Tech Mahindra locations, comfort with rotational or night shifts, willingness to be trained into a different technology, family background, and for laterals notice period, current CTC and expected CTC. Candidates commonly report the shift question being asked plainly, especially where the role sits on a network operations centre or a business process account.

Interview questions candidates report

Aptitude

  • A can complete a task in x days and B in y days; how long together?
  • Find the next term: 5, 11, 23, 47, ?
  • A shopkeeper sells at a loss on one item and a profit on another; find the net result.
  • Given a bar chart of yearly revenue, find the percentage increase between two years.
  • Four people sit in a row with two adjacency conditions; who sits at the end?
  • Fill in the blank with the correct preposition.
  • Find the average speed for a journey done at two different speeds.
  • How many ways can the letters of a given word be arranged?

Technical

  • What is the difference between a class and an object?
  • Explain inheritance and give a practical example.
  • What is an index in a database and when does it hurt performance?
  • What are the differences between a primary key and a foreign key?
  • Explain paging and segmentation in an operating system.
  • What is the OSI model and what happens at the transport layer?
  • What is the difference between a router and a switch?
  • How would you troubleshoot intermittent packet loss reported by a user?

Coding

  • Write a program to check whether a number is prime.
  • Reverse a string without using library functions.
  • Find duplicate elements in an array.
  • Swap two numbers without using a third variable.
  • Print a Floyd's triangle for a given number of rows.
  • Find the factorial of a number using recursion.
  • Given a sentence, count the number of words.

HR

  • Tell me about yourself and your family background.
  • Why do you want to join Tech Mahindra?
  • Are you comfortable with rotational shifts, including night shifts?
  • Would you accept a role in network operations rather than software development?
  • Are you willing to relocate anywhere in India?
  • Tell me about a time you handled pressure or a tight deadline.
  • What is your notice period and expected CTC?

How to prepare

  • Find out which track your drive is hiring for before you prepare. The same Tech Mahindra process feeds software, network and telecom operations, and business process roles, and the technical interview differs completely between them.
  • Revise networking fundamentals even for a software role. Reported technical sections and panels lean into OSI, TCP and UDP, IP addressing and troubleshooting more than at other large services firms, which follows from the company's telecom roots.
  • Practise a timed handwritten or typed essay with clean paragraphing. The written test is a reported elimination round, and it carries extra weight for any role with a client-facing or voice element.
  • If a group discussion is on the schedule, plan to speak within the first minute or two, make two solid points rather than six thin ones, and offer a summary near the end. Assessors commonly report scoring participation and structure, not volume.
  • Answer the shift question with a realistic range rather than a flat refusal. Rotational shifts are common on network operations and business process accounts, and reported outcomes suggest flexibility widens the roles you can be mapped to.
  • For laterals, be concrete about the platforms on your CV and the scale you handled, including the size of the estate or the accounts you supported. Panels commonly staff against a named client requirement rather than a generic pool.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tech Mahindra still hold group discussions?

Reported experiences are mixed and depend on the drive. Group discussions appear regularly in campus placements and in business process services hiring, and less often in purely technical off-campus cycles. Because it is one of the few large services firms where candidates still report the round, it is worth preparing for even if the invitation does not explicitly mention it.

What kinds of roles do freshers actually get?

Candidates commonly report offers across software engineering, network and telecom operations, technical support and business process services. Mapping is usually decided after the interview or even after joining and training, based on assessment performance, background and project demand. That is why the HR round tends to probe flexibility on technology and shifts so directly.

Is there a bond or service agreement for freshers?

Candidates commonly report a service commitment on fresher offers in several hiring years, typically a minimum service period after training with a penalty for early exit, with terms varying by year and track. The offer letter and its annexures are the authoritative source. Laterals generally report a standard notice period clause instead of any bond.

How long does the process take?

Campus drives are frequently compressed into a single day covering the test, group discussion and both interviews. Off-campus freshers commonly report a few weeks between the assessment and the interview call, then a further wait for the offer and a variable gap before onboarding. Laterals typically report two to five weeks, with joining driven by the notice period.
