Account Executive Interview Question

Talk to me about SPIN. How do you use it in a real conversation rather than as a script?

What the interviewer is probing, how to structure your answer, and a spoken example you can adapt.

Quick answer

SPIN is a question sequence: situation, problem, implication, need-payoff. In practice you keep situation questions short (research most of it beforehand), spend your effort on implication questions that expand the cost of the problem, and let the prospect state the value themselves in the need-payoff step. Used badly it sounds like an interrogation; used well the prospect does the persuading and you take notes.

Why interviewers ask this

Naming a methodology is easy; using one under pressure is not. The interviewer wants to hear that you understand implication questions do the heavy lifting, and that you do not waste a buyer's time asking things you could have found on their website or in their last earnings call. Answers that include a real question you ask, word for word, land much better than a definition of the acronym.

How to structure your answer

  • Define the four question types quickly, then move to how you use them.
  • Say that situation questions get replaced by pre-call research.
  • Give a real implication question you use, word for word.
  • Explain how need-payoff makes the prospect articulate the value.

Example answer

Spoken example, first person

Situation, problem, implication, need-payoff. The part that actually matters is implication, and the part people get wrong is situation. If I am asking how many people are on your team, I have wasted a question I could have answered from LinkedIn, and I have spent goodwill I need later. So I compress situation into a check: I read that you moved to a new billing system last year, is that live everywhere yet. Then problem, then I stay in implication for as long as they will let me. The question I use most is: what does that mean for the people downstream of you. It opens the deal up, because they start telling me who else is hurting, and those are the names I need. Need-payoff I use to hand the conclusion to them: if that reconciliation went away, what does your quarter close look like. When they answer that, they have written my business case in their own language, and I can quote it straight back in the proposal.
