Account Executive Interview Question

How would you break into a named account that has never replied to anyone here?

What the interviewer is probing, how to structure your answer, and a spoken example you can adapt.

Quick answer

Stop treating it as one account and pick a specific person with a specific problem. Find a trigger (a hire, an earnings comment, a new regulation, a product launch) and lead with something they would care about even if they never buy. Use multiple channels, involve customers or partners who already know them, and expect this to take months rather than a two-week sequence.

Why interviewers ask this

Enterprise reps live or die on self-sourced access to hard accounts, and inbound will not save you there. The interviewer wants creativity plus persistence with a plan, not volume for its own sake. In 2026 buyers get an enormous amount of automated outreach, so they are specifically listening for research and relevance that a generated sequence could not produce.

How to structure your answer

  • Pick people and problems, not the account as a whole.
  • Find a trigger event that makes the timing make sense to them.
  • Lead with something useful they keep whether or not they reply.
  • Work warm paths: customers, former colleagues, partners, user communities.
  • Commit to a long, patient cadence rather than a two week blitz.

Example answer

Spoken example, first person

I stop calling it an account, because you cannot email a logo. I pick three people whose job would be measurably easier if the problem we solve went away, and I go find out what is actually happening there. Earnings calls are underrated for public companies; you get executives saying out loud what the priorities are for the year, in their own words. Job ads are the same for private ones. If a company is hiring four compliance analysts, something is going on that I can speak to. Then I lead with something they keep regardless. I once sent a two-page breakdown of how three similar companies handled a specific regulation, no pitch, no deck, and got a reply within a day from someone who had ignored eleven prior emails. Warm paths beat everything though. A customer who moved there, a partner who implements for them, someone in a user group. My best enterprise logo took fourteen months and started at a meetup, in a conversation that had nothing to do with buying anything.
