Get the review started in parallel rather than sequentially, and stop treating it as a final step. Ask early who owns security and legal, send the standard package (SOC 2 report, DPA, security questionnaire, subprocessor list) before it is requested, and get your champion to book the internal reviewers now. If it genuinely cannot compress, tell your manager the deal is next quarter instead of forecasting hope.
Why interviewers ask this
The paper process is the letter most reps ignore and the most common cause of a slipped quarter. Interviewers want proof you treat security and legal as a workstream you manage from week one, that you know what the standard artifacts are, and that you will move a deal out honestly when the calendar is against you. It is a maturity check as much as a tactics check.
How to structure your answer
- Explain how you surface the paper process during qualification.
- Run security, legal, and commercial tracks in parallel.
- Push the standard artifacts out before anyone asks.
- Get your champion to book internal reviewers on the calendar.
- Move the forecast if the timeline is genuinely immovable.
Example answer
Mostly I try never to be in this position, because by the time you find out about an eight-week review, you have already lost. I ask about it in qualification: who has to review this, does it need a security assessment, how long did the last vendor take. That last question is the good one, because people will tell you exactly how bad it is. Once I know, I run three tracks at once. Commercial with the sponsor, security with whoever owns it, legal with the redlines started early. I send the SOC 2 report, the DPA, the subprocessor list, and our filled-in standard questionnaire before anyone asks, because the queue is usually the delay, not the content. Then I get the champion to book the reviewers now, since a security team with a two-week backlog is a scheduling problem, not a negotiation. And if it truly will not fit, I say so. I would rather tell my manager in week three that this is an early-next-quarter deal than defend a miss on the last Friday.
