Do not reorder the roadmap on the news alone. Find out whether their version actually solves the problem, whether your customers are asking because of it, and whether it changes the reason people choose you. Usually the right move is to keep going and differentiate on the part they did badly. Panic matching a competitor hands them control of your roadmap.
Why interviewers ask this
Interviewers want to see composure and evidence based reaction rather than reflex. They are checking whether you can tell a marketing announcement from a working product, whether you look for the signal in loss reasons and support requests instead of internal chatter, and whether you have a threshold that would genuinely change your plan. Immediate rebuilding to match is the answer that worries them most.
How to structure your answer
- Refuse to react to the announcement itself.
- Gather three signals: customer asks, product quality, effect on why people choose you.
- Default to continuing and differentiating on the weak part.
- Name the threshold that would genuinely change the plan.
Example answer
I try very hard not to react to the announcement itself, because a launch post is marketing and tells you almost nothing about whether the thing works. So I want three pieces of information. Have our customers actually started asking, or is it just our internal chat. Does their version solve the problem well, which usually means getting a trial account and using it properly. And does it change the reason people pick us, because most competitive features do not. Usually the answer is that we keep going, because we were building it for our own reasons and those have not changed, and often we can differentiate on the part they did badly. The one case where I would reorder is if it starts showing up as a loss reason in deals, and even then I want it in the data rather than from one account executive who lost a deal on price.
