UX Designer Interview Question

Tell me about a design that did not work once it shipped.

What the interviewer is probing, how to structure your answer, and a spoken example you can adapt.

Quick answer

Pick a real failure with a clear metric or user signal, explain what you believed at the time and why that belief was reasonable, then show what the evidence proved wrong. Describe the fix and what changed in your process afterwards. Avoid disguised humblebrags: 'it was too popular' is not a failure and interviewers have heard it.

Why interviewers ask this

Designers who cannot name a failure either have not shipped much or are not paying attention after launch. The interviewer wants intellectual honesty and evidence of learning loops, not self-flagellation. How you talk about a failure also reveals whether you blame engineering, the PM, or the users, which is a strong predictor of how you will behave on their team when something goes sideways.

How to structure your answer

  • Choose a genuine failure with a measurable signal.
  • Explain the reasoning that made the decision sensible at the time.
  • Say how you found out it was wrong and how fast.
  • Describe the fix and the process change that outlasted it.

Example answer

Spoken example, first person

We redesigned a filter panel on a marketplace search page. In testing it was cleaner and faster, and everyone liked it, including me. We shipped it to everyone at once, which was the actual mistake. Within a week, saved-search usage dropped by about a third. What we missed was that power users, maybe 8% of the base but a much larger share of transactions, had memorized the old positions and used that panel dozens of times a day. Our usability sessions were all with newer users, because those were easier to recruit, so we had optimized for first-time comprehension and quietly taxed the people who used it most. We fixed it by restoring keyboard shortcuts and letting people pin their frequent filters, and the numbers recovered in about three weeks. Two things changed permanently after that. I now recruit by usage frequency, not just by segment, and I do not ship a redesign of a high-frequency surface to everyone at once without a staged rollout.
